A German priest and theologian who held the chair of biblical theology at Wittenberg University in 1512. After expressing his dissatisfaction with corruption in the Catholic Church, he challenged it in 1517, precipitating the German Reformation. He broke from the Catholic Church in 1521 and set up the Lutheran Church which was the first of the new Protestant churches.
